Australia's railways featured a diversity of steam locomotives due to the range of rail gauges and locomotive designs
adopted by the various State Government Railways, together with a broad range of industrial users.

Today this diversity is reflected in the rich heritage of steam locomotives preserved in Australia.

 

Recent updates: 20 February 2026:

·        Significant progress with new-build SAR 4-4-0 Z 199:
Boiler construction underway and loco delivered to PRR Quorn.

·        QGR 4-6-2 1086 transferred from Mackay to
Downs Steam, Toowoomba.

·        NSWGR 0-6-0T 1076 restored to operation at
Goulburn Roundhouse Museum.

·        NSWGR 2-8-2 5908 repainted at
Goulburn Roundhouse Museum.

·        NSWGR 2-8-2 5916 transferred from Goulburn to Chullora.

·        Updates for the three Fowler locos at Timbertown, NSW:
Ruby, Green Hornet & Wollondilly.

·        Remains of a Krauss 0-4-0WT
at Catamaran Bay, Tasmania.
