2535 was sold by the New South Wales Government Railways to Australian Iron & Steel (AIS), where it received lined green livery. Upon retirement, 2535 was plinthed by AIS at the company’s visitor centre at Coniston. Unfortunately the lifting chains were poorly placed under the locomotive when it was being placed at Coniston, resulting in buckled running boards (and possibly frame damage). 2535 was apparently becoming derelict at Coniston and was under threat of scrapping. Fortunately the Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum stepped in and acquired the locomotive in the mid-1970's. It was subsequently transferred to Rhondda Colliery, near Newcastle, for storage. In the mid 1980's it was moved by road to Dorrigo, where it remains in storage. Unfortunately the Dorrigo
Steam Railway & Museum is not open to the general public and hence
access to 2535 and the other exhibits is restricted. For
more general background about the New South Wales Government Railways (B)205 / Z(25) class locomotives, refer to the page for
sister 2510. |
My thanks to Joel Turner for contributing this
view of 2535's tender stored at Dorrigo on 11 February 2013.
