South Maitland Railway Pty Ltd No. 19 10-class 2-8-2T |
This photo is kindly provided by Geoff Horne and shows SMR 19 plinthed at Port Waratah, Newcastle in the mid-1980's
This locomotive was built by Beyer Peacock & Co as their builder's number 5910 of 1915, becoming No.19 of the South Maitland Railway Pty Ltd's very successful "10-class" 2-8-2T locomotives. (a) No.19 was the fourth of the 10-class locomotives built for the South Maitland Railway, and the class eventually grew to 14 examples. (d)
The early 1980's found SMR 19 withdrawn and stripped pending major overhaul at the South Maitland Railways workshops. (b) This overhaul did not proceed following cessation of steam operations on the South Maitland Railways in 1983. SMR 19 was placed on a raised plinthed at the Port Waratah Coal Loader, Newcastle from the mid-1980's. Here it was displayed in lined black livery together with 3 ex-J&A Brown non-air coal hoppers and a brake van. (d)
Inevitably
SMR 19 deteriorated due to exposure to moist, salty air at Port Waratah. (d) It was later removed from its raised plinth and placed in storage at nearby Kooragang Island. (c)SMR 19, the 3 coal hoppers and brake van were donated to the Richmond Vale Railway Museum and relocated by road transport to the RVR on 12 May 2009. It is currently on display at Richmond Main Colliery and is planned for static restoration only. (b)
