This locomotive was No.7 on the
roster of Babinda Mill, south of Cairns in the far north of Queensland. I don’t know much about the
history of Babinda Mill No.7, other than that it is now privately owned at
Heyfield in Victoria’s Gippsland region where it has resided since the
1970's. It has been restored to operation in an attractive blue livery, and
has made occasional appearances at traction engine rallies such as the above
photograph taken in Heyfield, Victoria in May 2003. The namesake Babinda Mill itself
is now only a memory, having been demolished in 2013, although the Babinda area
remains served by an extensive 2’ gauge cane tramway serving other nearby mills. |
