This interesting
0-4-4-0T Mallet locomotive was built by German manufacturer Orenstein &
Koppel and worked at the Krebet Baru Sugar Mill, Indonesia, where it was
No.3. Krebet
Baru Mill No.3 was purchased for private preservation and imported to
Australia in 1987 (together with Krebet
Baru Mill No.11) and moved to suburban Bayswater, Melbourne in 1989,
where it kept company with Porter 0-6-0ST No.14P and two 0-4-0ST locos ex- Mt
Morgan Mines. In October
2009 this locomotive was sold to another private collector and was exported. This
locomotive is broadly similar to another Orenstein & Koppel 0-4-4-0
Mallet loco preserved in Australia, the former Magnet No.3 which is under restoration at the Bennett
Brook Railway in Perth, WA. UPDATE
– October 2025: The new owner
and location for Krebet Baru Mill No.3 was unknown to me until it resurfaced in
2025 on the list of the amazing ‘Collection X’ owned by the late Peter
Rampton in Surrey, UK. Some items from this significant international
narrow-gauge locomotive collection are now being exhibited to the public at
the Vale of Rheidol railway at Aberystwyth, Wales, where they are housed in
the Engine Shed
Museum based in the former Great Western Railway locomotive running shed.
