This locomotive was built by Hudswell, Clarke & Co. Ltd of Leeds, England as their builder's No.1553 of 1924. It operated at Macknade Mill where it carried the number 4. a
As at about 2000 this locomotive had been dismantled for restoration and proposed conversion to 2' 6" gauge for use on the Walhalla Goldfields Railway. However this plan did not proceed and apparently it was sold in a dismantled state to a private buyer. c
Light Railways No.215 of October 2010 included a news article about this locomotive and sister Hudswell Clarke No.1555 of 1925. It is being restored to operation for use on the Alambi Private Railway, using the boiler from John Fowler 12823. b
