Pleystowe Mill No.2 Scrapped |
|
Pleystowe
Mill No.2 and an unknown admirer at Mackay Harbour Park in June 1967.
Incredibly,
both builder’s plates were still intact and displayed on the cabsides.
The loco’s
outside frames are highlighted in red paint.

Pleystowe
Mill No.2 was a handsome 0-4-2ST locomotive built by John Fowler & Co,
one of many steam locomotives supplied to the sugar mill railways of
Queensland by this well-known Leeds company. Following
retirement from service, Pleystowe Mill No.2 was placed in Mackay Harbour
Park but unfortunately it was disposed as scrap metal by 1971. Contemporary photos show it to be in fair
condition, so perhaps the council objected to cost of regular repainting in
Mackay’s tropical, coastal environment. The
little that I know of Pleystowe Mill No.2 is based on the photos appearing on
this page and John Browning’s listing of preserved sugar cane locomotives on
the Light Railway Research Society of Australia website, as referenced
below. I would appreciate the contribution of further information
relating to its unfortunate scrapping. The two
photos of Pleystowe mill No.2 appearing on this website are from the Don Moffat
collection and were kindly provided by Glen Hall of the Mackay Historical
Society and Museum Inc. |
No.2
displayed at Mackay Harbour Park in January 1968.
Alas the fun ended a few years later when No.2 took a visit
to the blast furnace.
