No. 5

Ex-Bingera Mill

No 5 at the head of a train of toast-rack carriages on the Dreamworld Railway, Coomera on 14 December 2001.

The locomotive has been ‘westernised’ somewhat via a prominent cow-catcher, livery and detailing on the sand domes.

This Perry locomotive was formerly No.5 on the roster of Bingera Mill (now part of the Bundaberg Sugar group), which is located 22km south-west of Bundaberg. According to Wikipedia, Adelaide company Perry Engineering Co. Ltd built a total of 19 steam locomotives for various Australian sugar mills, of which 16 locomotive are listed here as surviving in preservation.

No. 5 has had a number of homes during its preservation career, starting with the Goulburn Museum of Historic Engines where it featured within the large locomotive collection based there in the 1970's. By the 1980’s it had moved to the Dreamworld Railway at Coomera on the Gold Coast, Qld, where it shared operational duties with Baldwin locomotive on the circular railway around the Dreamworld theme park. Here I understand it was commonly known as ‘Perry’ and featured a somewhat Americanised appearance.

In 2013, the Dreamworld theme park scaled back its railway's steam program by replacing most of its operations with a steam outline locomotive. Their Baldwin locomotive still runs on occasion, but No.5 ‘Perry’ was donated to the Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society (ANGRMS) and transferred to their Woodford Railway, where it arrived on 6 November 2014.  I understand No 5 ‘Perry’ is generally maintained in operational status at the Woodford Railway.

The following Courier Mail news item details the locomotive’s move to ANGRMS Woodford:
