Midland

Displayed at Gwalia

This photo is kindly provided by Geoff Murdoch and shows "Midland" displayed at Leonora in 1972.

The Sons Of Gwalia Gold Mine operated an extensive tramway to supply wood to their mining operations at Gwalia, north of Kalgoorlie.  Built to the unusual gauge of 1' 8", three steam locomotives were used on this timber tramway, each named after its place of manufacture.  Preserved locomotive "Midland" is a 0-6-2T built at the West Australian Government Railways at their Midland Workshops in 1934.

The Sons of Gwalia Gold Mine closed on 31 December 1963.  Fortunately Midland was saved for display, initially at Leonora.  It was relocated to the Sons of Gwalia Gold Mine display in the early 1970's, where it keeps company with a bogie Fowler tender.
