‘Marian’ is an industrial shunting loco from the well-known Scottish builders Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co, turned out by their factory in Kilmarnock, Scotland on 21 May 1947. It was built to a standard Andrew Barclay saddle-tank design with cylinders of 16” diameter and 24” stroke. It was supplied new to John Lysaght (Australia) Pty Ltd for shunting duties at their Port Kemba steel mill, which produced flat rolled products including their iconic corrugated roofing sheets. Marian was of the same design and capacity of a very similar Lysaght’s shunting loco from Andrew Barclay known as ‘Alison’ (b/n 1738 of 1922).

Marian was withdrawn from service in 1964. Rather than consign the loco to the furnace at the adjacent BHP steelworks, Lysaghts chose to plinth Marian at their staff recreation ground at Figtree. In 1978 the loco was acquired for the Hunter Valley Steam Railway & Museum collection, arriving at their Rhondda Colliery storage site on 26 November 1978.

With the Hunter Valley Steam Railway & Museum subsequently shifting focus to the Dorrigo branch on the NSW North Coast (and hence renamed as the Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum), Marian was transferred to their new site next to Dorrigo station on 13 July 1980. Here Marian has remained in storage and in company of another standard Andrew Barclay 16” shunter, the ex-Comsteel loco known as ‘Juno’ (b/n 1739 of 1922) and sister to ‘Alison’ (b/n 1738 of 1922).
