The Kerang & Koondrook Tramway was built in 1889 to connect the Murray River port of Koondrook with the Victorian Railways line to Melbourne via a junction at Kerang, 22 km away. A 4wVBT (4-wheel vertical boiler tank) locomotive from the Sentinel Waggon Works, Shropshire (possibly b/n 5766) was imported in 1929 to work the line and shunt the Murray River wharf sidings. The Kerang & Koondrook Tramway passed into Victorian Railways operation in 1952. It closed to passenger services in 1976, although freight services lasted a little longer until official closure of the line in 1981. The original Sentinel locomotive was withdrawn in 1941 and scrapped in 1952, however a replica was constructed in 1984 and placed on display at Koondrook station (situated in the main street), together with a number of historic VR freight wagons. |
