This dinky little cane locomotive was built by the well-known Scottish builders Andrew Barclay, Sons & Co, at their Kilmarnock works, and worked at Qunaba Mill at Mon Repos, near Bundaberg. It is unusual in that Andrew Barclay locomotives were uncommon in the Australian sugar industry – I’m not aware of any others - although the various standard gauge Andrew Barclay designs were popular with various colliery and heavy industry users.

At some stage the little Qunaba Mill Barclay loco was obtained by a private owner, joining his interesting collection of steam machinery on a rural site near Echuca, Victoria. The owner kindly permitted me to view his collection on 23 March 2005 and the photos on this page date from that visit. At that time the loco was stored in a dismantled state; the owner advised that the boiler was beyond restoration, however a spare Baldwin boiler had been obtained to provide a replacement.

I would appreciate any updates on progress with this locomotive &/or photographs showing how it looked prior to dismantling.

A second view of the Qunaba Mill Barclay loco as stored at Echuca on 23 March 2005.
I don’t recall seeing the side tanks, but I imagine they were stored nearby.

This spare Baldwin boiler is stored for intended future use on the Barclay loco.

Here is the old boiler for the Qunaba Mill Barclay; apparently this boiler is beyond economic repair.
