There has
been some confusion about the identity of the BB181/4 Class
locomotive preserved at Winton. It wears the builder’s plate of sister
No.1028 (Vulcan Foundry B/N 5916 of 1950) and is often reported as No.1015
(Vulcan Foundry B/N 5903 of 1950) however enthusiasts report that detailed
inspection of the work stamps on various components shows it is actually No.1077 (Walkers Limited B/N 545 of 1956). This
locomotive was donated by Queensland Railways to the Winton District
Historical Society for preservation at Winton, despite the BB181/4
Class locomotives not having worked in this outback region during their
service careers. Today No.1077 is displayed at the Waltzing Matilda
Centre at Winton. Recent photographs suggest the loco is well cared for
and generally complete; no doubt the dry outback climate has also assisted
its conservation. An
excellent reference for further information about the BB181/4
Class locomotives is ‘Locomotives in the Tropics, Volume 2, Queensland
Railways 1910 – 1958’ by John Armstrong. |
My thanks to Murray Lawrence for contributing this view of
No.1077 at Winton in January 1993.
Murray Lawrence also provided this photo of a builder's
plate attached to No.1077 at Winton.
"The Vulcan Foundry (Limited),
Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire No.5916 of 1950."
This plate belongs to sister No.1028.
