The B(55) class 2-6-0 locomotives (later renamed the (Z)24 class) were ordered at a time when the NSWGR was desperately short of motive power.  They were pooled with the similar but earlier B(205) / (Z)25 class 2-6-0 locomotives on main-line freight duties until displaced by “Standard Goods” 2-8-0 engines, gravitating to secondary lines before also being ousted from that role in the 1930’s by newly converted (C)30T class engines.  Some (Z)24’s continued in shunting roles, while many were sold to private users including collieries and sand & gravel quarries.

2414 was acquired by the Electricity Commission of NSW in 1959 for shunting duties at the Bunnerong Power Station, Port Botany where it became No.5.  The Electricity Commission operated a number of (Z)24 class locomotives at this site, 2408 (No. 7), 2413 (No.6), 2414 (No.5) and 2423 together with a (Z)20 class locomotive.

No.5 (the erstwhile 2414) was stopped in 1967 at which stage it became a parts donor for sister No.7 (formerly 2408).  Its remains were donated by the Electricity Commission of NSW to the Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum in 1975.  2414 is now stored incomplete at Dorrigo and is missing its tender, cab and pony truck (although the swing arm remains and the DSR&M has recovered a suitable wheelset from scrap at Chullora).  Accordingly the major components remaining unavailable are the cab (a relatively simple fabrication) and the pony truck axle boxes.

Fortunately a spare (Z)24 class tender had been in store for many years at the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum, Thirlmere.  This tender was acquired by the Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum in 2011 and has since been transferred to Dorrigo for pairing with 2414.

For more general information about the B(55) / (Z)24 class locomotives, refer to the entry for sister 2419.

Tender TAB 318 (last paired with 1901 & 2532) is seen stored alongside the Thirlmere “Loop Line” on 23 November 2008.

This tender is now at Dorrigo for pairing with 2414.
